The abbreviation RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) summarizes directive 2011/65/EU on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, as well as the respective implementation into national law.

The goal is to ban extremely problematic components from products in connection with the massive expansion of throwaway electronics. This also includes enforcing lead-free soldering of electronic components, prohibiting the use of toxic flame retardants in the manufacture of cables and the introduction of appropriate replacement products. The elements and components used must also themselves be free of the corresponding materials.

This has a direct impact on the firms involved, such as importers, individual enterprises (including small hardware companies) and businesses and chains of stores, and so ultimately also on the consumer.
